Sophomore Composition is a one-year foundation course that helps students advance their writing skills, and prepares them for college writing. There will be classes over weeks 1-16.

The classes will involve introduction to different kinds of writing, and also regular group discussions to look closely at writing examples and to identify areas for continued/further improvement. This class will also familiarise you with all sorts of materials and tools available to you as an academic writer.

For this semester (first semester), we will first concentrate on prewriting skills and strategies (brainstorming topics, reading-writing conversation, outlining, etc.), before introducing the basics of writing an essay and editing skills.

For the second semester, we will zoom in to work through argumentative essays, before we turn to short research papers.

*This course will be conducted in both English and Mandarin.

課程目標
This course aims to help students develop confidence and skills in using English at university level. By the end of this course, students will be able to:

- write English in a clear and coherent manner
- use an appropriate range of vocabulary and sentences in their writing
- organise ideas and structure a compelling argument
- produce essays on academic and general interest topics
- demonstrate the ability to revise and edit written work

Assignments submitted more than 24 hours after the due date will not be accepted, unless reasonable excuse is provided beforehand (for sick leave, official medical report should be presented). In this circumstance, you will not receive a grade/ comments for this assignment.
